Module objectives/intended learning outcomesAfter actively participating in the course (C), students (A) are able to analyze and distinguish organic compounds based on their sources, functional groups, structures, nomenclature, isomers, isomer conformations, and biosynthesis (B, C5); and are able to apply this understanding (P4) to accurately classify the organic compounds (D, A4).After actively participating in the course (C), students (A) are able to analyze and differentiate the physical and chemical properties of organic compounds based on their structures and elemental compositions, including: carbon and hydrogen (C, H),  carbon, hydrogen, and halogens (C, H, X), carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen (C, H, O), carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and halogens (C, H, O, X), carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen (C, H, N), carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen (C, H, N, O), carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur (C, H, S), carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur (C, H, N, S) (B, C5); and are able to apply the data on these properties (P4) to accurately verify the characteristics of the compounds (D, A5).After actively participating in the course (C), students (A) are able to analyze and distinguish the uses of organic compounds based on their structures and elemental compositions, including: carbon and hydrogen (C, H), carbon, hydrogen, and halogens (C, H, X), carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen (C, H, O), carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and halogens (C, H, O, X), carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen (C, H, N), carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen (C, H, N, O), carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur (C, H, S), carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur (C, H, N, S) (B, C5); and are able to apply these compounds (P4) and demonstrate their appropriate uses accurately (D, A5).
ContentThis course explores the fundamental concepts of hydrocarbon and organic molecule formation; hydrocarbon compounds (alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and arenes); organic compounds containing halogens (haloalkanes); organic compounds containing oxygen (alcohols, ethers, epoxides, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, acid anhydrides, acyl halides, and esters); organic compounds containing nitrogen (amines, amides, nitrates, nitrites, nitriles, nitro, nitroso, imines, imides, azides, cyanates, isocyanates, and azo compounds); organic compounds containing sulfur (thiols, sulfides, disulfides, sulfoxides, sulfones, sulfinic acids, sulfonic acids, sulfonate esters, thiocyanates, isothiocyanates, thials, and thioketones); and organic compounds containing phosphorus (phosphines). The discussion emphasizes the structure of functional groups (except for alkanes and cycloalkanes), nomenclature (both trivial and IUPAC), physical and chemical properties, and applications of the compounds. In addition, the course also covers types of isomerism and stereochemistry.
