Module objectives/intended learning outcomesThrough discussions and question-and-answer sessions, students are able to understand the principles of quantum mechanics in accurately explaining the behavior of microscopic particles, while demonstrating responsibility in their learning.Through discussions and question-and-answer sessions, students are able to apply quantum theory concepts to accurately explain the movement of electrons in hydrogen atoms and multi-electron atoms, as well as the concept of atomic orbitals, while demonstrating responsibility in their learningThrough discussions and question-and-answer sessions, students are able to understand quantum theory concepts to accurately explain chemical bond formation, while demonstrating responsibility in their learning.
ContentThis course is designed to strengthen students’ knowledge in understanding the development of atomic theory; the emergence of quantum theory; basic quantum mechanical systems and their applications; Hückel Molecular Orbital Theory; quantum theory of the hydrogen atom; multi-electron atoms, term symbols, and the concept of orbitals; ionic bonding and the Born-Haber cycle; covalent bonding (Valence Bond Theory and Molecular Orbital Theory); van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding; as well as metallic bonding and band theory in semiconductors. Students are also guided to develop skills in solving problems independently, with honesty and discipline.
Exams and assessment formatswritten examinations, student presentations, and guided class discussions
