Module objectives/intended learning outcomesAfter completing the course and engaging in a series of exercises (C), students (A) are able to accurately (D) analyze (C4) and integrate (A4) theoretical foundations for the application (P2) of UV-Vis spectrophotometry, IR spectrophotometry, mass spectrometry, and NMR spectroscopy in determining organic molecular structures. After completing the course and engaging in a series of exercises (C), students (A) are able to accurately (D) construct (C6) molecular formulas and structural formulas of organic compounds through the ability to manage (P5) and organize (A4) spectral data from UV-Vis, IR, mass, and NMR spectroscopy.
ContentThis course is designed to equip students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills required to pursue advanced studies in chemistry, and to contribute as mentors in chemistry olympiads and school-based mini-research projects at the high school level. The course covers key spectroscopic techniques used in the determination of molecular structure, including:UV-Visible Spectrophotometry: basic concepts, absorption spectra, and the ability to interpret UV-Vis spectra to identify structural features of organic molecules;Infrared (IR) Spectrophotometry: fundamental principles, IR spectral patterns, frequency absorption, fingerprint regions, and skills in spectral interpretation;Mass Spectrometry (MS): core concepts, mass spectra analysis, molecular ions, fragmentation patterns, and proficiency in using mass spectra to distinguish between compounds;Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy: basic principles, chemical shifts of ¹H and ¹³C nuclei, and the ability to analyze and interpret NMR spectra for structure elucidation.The course emphasizes the integration of theoretical understanding with analytical interpretation skills, preparing students to competently deduce structural information from various types of spectral data.
