Module objectives/intended learning outcomesStudents can explain the general classification of biomolecules and porphyrin complexes and their biological functions through independent/group assignments in the context of disease/deficiency/poisoning.Students can explain Hemoglobin, myoglobin, and cytochrome and their biological functions through independent/group assignments in the context of disease/deficiency/poisoning.Students can explain metalloenzymes, nitrogen fixation, and metal/non-metal elements that change biological systems that are harmful to health through independent/group assignments.
ContentThe Bioinorganic course is part of the undergraduate Chemistry study program curriculum that studies the role and interaction of inorganic elements in biological systems. This course covers topics such as the biological function of metals in the body, the mechanism of action of metals on enzymes and proteins, the role of metals in metabolic processes, and bioinorganic applications in health, the environment, and technology. Students will learn the basic concepts of metal biochemistry, and the molecular mechanisms involving metals in biological systems. In addition, the latest developments in bioinorganic research will be discussed, such as metal-based drug design, the use of metals in cancer therapy, and the application of metals in biosensor technology.
